It is an easy job to do yourself, or with someone else helping.
Post up where you are and there might be someone close who has the tools and can be of assistance.

Yeah mate , I don't mind the run down to collinsville. Tondara road is all dirt and decnnt ride. I don't have the spanner for the the doo anymore. The idea was to post it around . I have a quality torque wrench. If ya need a hand I can run down on a sat drink ale and run home sunday.

I'd ride down an do it for a beer, somehow though, I dont think my klr has the required fording depth for.crossing that big a pond.

Gunny, get some larger tires and you might be able to float across. Or if you like your beer you could make a boat out of the cans, these are two designs that may hold you and the KLR. A small pond is never an excuse to miss out an a beer

It is my experience that the Kawi dealers know very little bout the doo, let alone how to doo the job & most do not even have the tools.
St Augustine, FL US one Power sports a pretty good service & better than fair price on their bikes, dealership.
Sales Manager said their Service manager would like to talk w/me. The SM asked if I still did the "little tension thing for the inside chain". I thought at first I was in some kind of trouble, & smiled w/ a sometimes for riding buds only & never as a business.
He laughed & said they had their first request for only on an 05 KLR. I suggest that they were only on the KLR.
Seems this rider was headed on the TAT w/ a group & the other KLR guy said to get it done before going on the trip.
The rider already had the EM kit but dealer had no tools.
I was asked to talk w/ the tech guy slated for the job.
Tech guy was experienced & had never seen the insides of a KLR, other than a valve adjustment.
He wanted the wrench. Gave the SM my wrench a couple of days later & got a call for the SM & they needed the puller.
Seems they went on KLRworld, as I suggested & saw I was right about the puller.
Turns out this red 05 belonged to a later riding bud call "javee" from Spain & rebuilding the famious "Bridge of Lions" .
Point here is the dealership will do the doo job, but any KLR guy who has done it once is your better bet & he will let you watch & help & buy him a couple beers & maybe a lunch. Plus he has the TOOLS.
Besides this is male bonding time......

Hey Dazza , Let me know when you can get the tools to do your doo and well organise a weekend to change it . You do need the spanner and a puller . If you look on the eagle mike site you'll know what they are. Maybe one of the klr mob in brissy might post them up , just pay for the postage then post them back. Be good to have a spare gasket, but not essential.

No worries Barra,i will have to buy the tools & gaskit & wait for a nice weekend when its not raining hey?
Where you coming from exactly?
There are heaps of dirt roads around here with some great scenery that go for miles, the KLR is perfect for around here.
Just need to get heavier suspension as well, its just too easy to bottom out,got the moab shock on order as well.

Haha, well macca looks like you've lost 20 bucks mate.
I pulled all the cases & flywheel off, changed the doo hickey & spring put it all back together filled it with oil, started it & oil leaking from the inner case gasket.Looks like i the gasket was out of place in 1 section, bugger.
After pulling it apart again & refitting the gasket i overtightened a bolt on the outer case & stripped it.
I started & rode the bike with no leakes yet but will have to hellicoil the stripped threades asap i guess.
Anyway,it's all a learning experience i guess.
If any one wants to borrow the tools let me know.

All good now,the stripped theads have been drilled & hellicoiled.I was suprised at how little it takes to strip those threads.
Might have to invest in a torque wrench i think.

Or just a really short ratchet handle.
You have to find the break even point for when the cost of the torque wrench exceeds the cost of helicoil kits.
I'm ham fisted, so got the torque wrench early

Dazza, Looks like you went ahead and did the doo. Ive been working every weekend lately and still won't get one off for another 2 to 3 weeks. Trouble is ,I don't have me own computer ( My son owns the lap tops and takes'em away ) and not always up to date. What year is your klr?

noth'in wrong with earlier models dazza. Be good to get down for a weekend and maybe have an ale at bowen river pub. I bet the creeks running through tondarra road are up a bit with all the rain we've had. Like I said ,I've been a bit on the busy side with work and I was heading up to the OCR in 3 weeks , but I don't think the boss will give me the time off. Anyway, the bowen river pub is bloody good spot. cheers.

Barra, give me a yell when you finally talk the boss into giving you a weekend off & maybe we can meet at the Bowen river pub.I actually go there maybe every second weekend as it's only about 45min from where i live.
I believe it's the second oldest pub in Australia, well that's what i've been told anyway.

Gday fellow riders,

G'day Dazza,
Depends on where you live.
I have the tools and I have done the DOO on my klr650c. A shop job would probably be 1 to 2 hrs @ approx $100/hr. Then you have to have the parts as most shops wouldn't know where to source the DOO. Get it direct from Eagle Mike at Eagle Engineering.
You may need the 2 gaskets for left hand side crankcases although I got away without them. A new rotor bolt (about $15) is also a good idea.
The DOO can be ordered with the torque spring but I didn't bother.
I live 60kms east of Melbourne if that is any help.
Glad to assist if I can.
Regards
Glenn
