Thanks everyone for the thoughts. I was going to go with just a knife, but then decided to go the multi-tool route instead. I got the Gerber Suspension.

... As someone mentioned previously, with knives you get what you pay for. That being said thee are some good "bargains" in lower priced knives. The Multi-Tools are great as back-up and handy to throw in your tool bag. A decent folding (lock-blade) be it Buck , Case or whatever, is close to ideal when carried in a belt case. ...the case is less prone to having the knife fall out when you fall over ! The Swiss Army knives are very handy, compact and keep a decent edge, however, the blades tend to "wobble" ! If you want a cheap and very functional fixed blade, look at the "Mora's", excellent edge retention and very strong for their size .... at around $12 or so, you can afford to have more than one handy at all times ! ' Can't imagine not having a small blade handy at all times !! .... David K.

hey trailryder looks like you made a good decision on a multi tool.  that looks like a winner to me.  myself i carry a pocket knife and have since i was about 8 yrs old.  i have different knives for different reasons and would never be without one.  they just come in handy for all sorts of stuff.  for riding though i think the multi tool is a good choice i keep one on my bike i have several of them to.  but in my pocket i also have a pocket knife.  Lockbacks are my favorite just for safety sake but i have a bunch that arent and carry them regulaly to.  if you ever get used to carrying a pocket knife then you feel naked without one.  i dont have many inexpensive knives most are good quality  on a typical camping trip i may have as many as 6 with me. lol  i think if you use the knife function on the gerber much you will be looking to buy a good quality knife.  i would recomend medium size case stockman to someone new to carry. but thats just my 2 cents worth.

I suppose you could, but I think you might lose your keys if the cap blows while crimping it   naughty

Once I remove the cap, there's no re-crimping since the bottle will be empty.  PARTY!

so who is hosting the camp fire the first night we all are there ...... I'll bring my 6 of killians and maybe a 6 of moosehead beer, don't know if any of you have had moosehead beer, great stuff.

My vote is for MSGT-R to play host the first night, I'll host one of them, or assist where needed.

Gunny, if you get to Utah, there's a brew pub in SLC ( Yeah, that's what I said, a brew pub in SLC ) that has some excellent beer.  My favorite that they make is a porter they call Poligamy Porter, cause they say you can't have just one!  I can't remember the name of the place, but being the first one, just about everyone can direct you there.

Been to a few of the micro brewery pubs in SLC, I was out there 2 years ago for a couple weeks with the wife and kids {wished I had trailered the KLR behind the Volvo banghead} and our friend Des took us out a few times, it tasted good but ..... you get so used to the beer having a bit of a kick to it, it's almost like drinking fizzy water, but I digress, I'm no beer snob  ROTFL I like to sample everything the local area has to offer, and why is it so hard to find a place that makes good hot wings in Utah ! I could make a killing opening up a bar that served just beer and wings !

Little late, but I joined late.  My choices in knives are Spyderco and Cold Steel.  Yes, they are expensive.  But, I have carried one or the other everyday for the last 15 years.  Carried a Spyderco Delica for a long time.  It was a serrated blade, which I personally don't like.  I let my dad borrow it and he lost it.  So, I replaced it with a Cold Steel Trail Guide, unfortunately it is not made anymore, and just recently bought a Spyderco Salt I.

The Salt I has a high resistance to corrosion, special blend of steel.  It holds an edge really well, and it is bright yellow.  I clip it inside my pocket and it is always ready in an instant.

Revs

I also make a few 'custom' knives.  I buy the preformed blade and add handles and anything else I think they need.

And a Shrade nulti tool. And a heavy fixed blade military style survival knife ...kinda like Rambo uses. But the one that get's the most use is the Kershaw.

I like my french switchblade...the only one I have found to have a smooth flowing action and a tight head.
Yeh yeh I know it's frigg'in french....but it is the best one I've seen.

My dad and I went to france about 8 years ago, I think been a long time....any way we were walking down through the dock area of Nice and there was a small knife shop that was full of high end knivs of all sorts. I've always wanted a switchblade and couldn't pass it up. The only issue was getting it home. I suggested suffing into a dirty pair of socks or something but being the all important person my old man thinks he is, says....I'll carry it...they won't bother me!  lol

He all but got strip searched!!   but he got to keep the knife for his trouble...lol  well I got it that is.
I don't recommend doing what we did ....it certainly wasn't or wouldn't be worth it for sure.

The only problem is that I can't take it anywhere in fear that it will be taken off me by the long arm of the law so to speak. So it sits in a drawer and comes out once in a while, just to entertain me....what a life...

My every day knife is an old knife I found on the farm years ago and has that beaten look with broken sides but just has that charm and keeps it's edge.

I can understand that; my dad had a switchblade he carried everywhere. I've inherited it now, and even have a collection of Hibbens and others of my own.
