Was an intresting article.  With the new KLX450R Kawasaki, or the Honda CRF450X or my favorite the Yamaha WR450F, why not just start at that level?

The Yamaha and Honda, you'd only need to add a larger tank and a Baja kit and you'd be good to go forever with power to spare.  (the Kaw would need a skid plate added).

Fun for me is riding, not turning wrenches all day.  LOL  I'm also better at connecting electrical wires than tearing engines/carburetors apart.

I agree, some people like working on their bikes into perpetuity and I did enjoy the article, a lot.
