I took the KLR 250 up to the Ocala Nat. Forrest last week. Bike is great, trail wings no so good in the sand.  The klr250 site has a lot of knobby tire sizes listed but no for-sure fits.

What size/brand knobby will fit my 2005 without rubbing the stock pipe?  I'm not worried about Dot approval so anything goes.

On my other set of wheels I have a IRC VE33 4.60 x 17 rear tire mounted that I run on my klr250 with no rubbing issues.  It's not a DOT approved tire but I've only used it a few times so far it it has worked well in the mud and sand so far.  Check denniskirk.com and americanmototire.com they both carry this tire for a decent price.  Front tire is a IRC VE35 in this picture with the VE33 on the rear.

I am running a 5.10 D606 Dunlop on Lil Kanes ride.I put 4 shim washers between the pipe mount and the pipe to move it out a little away from the tire.Chain adjuster is about 3/4 way to rear.Shock spring preload is ran way down to reduce shock bottoming.

I know I had 606's on my 250 and I'm pretty sure that they are the same with as HC's.
I had a 1" spacer between the subframe and the mount and they would kiss the muffler when it hit hard. I think they actually cracked the exhaust, but I'm not sure about that.

The other thing you really need to watch is the radiused area at the front of the swing arm. They will get very close even with a used chain and sprockets. I noticed HC said his were 3/4 out and thats about where mine were when I tore down. New chain, fresh sprockets, might not have allowed the PO to put these on.

Just because its been done, doesn't mean it'll work everytime.

I saw someone alot smarter than me say "follow the manual and if you don't have one, get one".
Pretty good advice since that will give you a basis to start from. Explore on your own nickle from there.

I run a 3.25 front and a 5.10 rear Kenda K270 on my KLR250; one washer as a spacer on rear exhaust bracket keeps the muffler away from the tire on suspension compression.

I find the K270's effective, and certainly affordable, 50/50 tires.

YMMV.

I was on cheap cycle parts and was going to get the ve33- it was like 70 bucks-ish.  Then I saw a Cheng shin 755 knobbie 4.60x17 for $46.   My cheap soul won out.  I got the 80/100x21 front in the same brand for $36. Shipping was $9.

The tubes cost almost as much as these tires so im ready to be abused. I'll let you know if they fit and if they are any good.
