FWIW I carefully put a pair of pliers on it and gave it a twist and pull and it came right out. No damage to the brass at all. thumb

I tried that, but it is REALLY stuck in there. I thought that maybe several months of gas washing around on it and getting bumped around on the trails might loosen it up some.

I did the pliers too, but it didn't help. Mine was really set in there..... I was afraid I might break something....

Same here on the tight, i tried twisting and pulling to the point the brass was starting to gaul so I quit.

Update...
After having installed the Yami petcock the Sherpa can sit for weeks and once turning the fuel on, it starts up in about 2 revolutions! The jet kit and the petcock change made this sucker start like it's brand new!

Thank you all for your tips!!!!

Okay, I've got a brand new-to-me Sherpa with serious carb issues.  The thing sputters and hesitates like crazy.  I've just ordered the new jets from Dr. Jekle, but I was wondering:  As a newbie (never worked on a carb before) are there some others things I should look at, do, or clean while I've got the carb out and open?  This bike is for my wife, and I gotta get it running smoothly!

Without any back ground and maintenance history on it. If it was new to me I would clean the air filter, oil & filter, dump the fuel including drain the bowl on the carb. I would also replace the plug with a recommended OEM plug. Here is a big tip do not remove the plug without thoroughly cleaning around the plug or you might upon removal dislodge junk and it could fall into the open head this is an ugly thing to happen. Removing the tank is a handy way to get to the plug and get a good look around. If these simple things don't clear up the problem call the Dr. ( Jekele )

Put any fears away. You can work on this bike. Take your time and follow the Dr's instructions when dealing with the carb. He knows his stuff. If you have problems, let us know. Someone here will have your solution. I'm cruizin'

Everything Benson said. Make sure to inspect the carb bowl for sand/grit/gunk while the carb is disassembled. When you drain the tank, drain it into a glass container to inspect the gas, keeping an eye open for water contaimination. Good luck.

While you've got the carb apart, go to the local Ace Hardware and get allen head screws for the float bowl and the top cap. You'll thank me someday.

Wiltony, I just did the petcock swap a couple of weeks ago and all was great....and still is, BUTT, I found today that the capped off vacuum line had come loose and I too was experiencing sputtering and dieing at idle. Once the line was restored all was good. Might look that the vacuum line (to the petocock) isn't cracked or rotted.

Awesome guys, thank you for your help and advice.  DRJ's jets came yesterday so I'll be pulling things apart soon.  I'll let you know how it goes!

OK, today I joined Benson, Camas, Mel and a legion of others and installed the Yam petcock. I went ahead and switched the pick up tube too. I clamped the tube longways in a vise so I had lots of contact area and wouldn't crush the tube. Just a little twist of the valve and off it came, installed the SS pickup in the Yam valve the same way. Haven't ridden the bike yet but will Sun. for sure. Mine was dripping gas anytime the engine was running. On the last tank, I only got to 79 miles before going on reserve, usually goes around 130. Probably wasted enough gas to have bought everyone on the forum a Yam petcock.

I still cannot believe the difference the petcock change made. The bike can sit for weeks and starts on about the first revolution. This and the rejet made our SS a new bike! I owe it all to you guys and this forum thumb

I successfully installed DRJ's jets with amazing results!  WOW!   I made a new post about it here:

http://klrworld.com/forums/index.php/topic,3940.0.html

As a side note, my petcock did not leak in the on or reserve position, and seemed to be working properly.

I want to thank you all for your work on the petcock situation. (I already have Dr J's jets - Thanks Doc). While both of my SSs are low mileage and don't yet have the problem, I'm now prepared for the inevitable.

As is mentioned above, the VXs have the same problem - which I have experienced.  Fortunately did not bend the crank.

I wish all of this was in a binder form so I could have it in front of me when I get into the Land of Carbs and Petcocks.
'Guide to Burping Sherpa's' or something. :)

Seriously, I've been reading this over and over and I think I'm going to have to print it out somehow for when I have the guts of the Sherpa in front of me. I'll watch the others (KLR650s) work on their carbs weekend after next so I can get some exposure to it all and maybe with "adult supervision" (I borrowed that; it's a great line) I can rejet and reset everything before going on some serious off roads in October.

Anyone from the DFW area that has done this and patient enough to teach/guide me? (I want to do the work; I just don't know what I'm doing)

I'm spoiled by having FI on the Whee ;)

Glad I found y'all because I have maaaaaaaaaaany questions.

Can anyone confirm the part number for the XT350 petcock? The photo from Camas looks like 23F-24500-11-00. I have also seen 15A-24500-03-00?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Hey Tex,,,,,,,if n when you decide to do the rejet,,give me a shout,,,i am outa jets at the moment, but should have some in next week,,,,you dont need to print out nuthing,,i include the re-jet directions step by step,,,,its got a lil humor in it,,but no doubt, i have had many newbees to carbs who never did any carb mods(never even touched a carb) and they installed them will little trouble,,its really a no-brainer,,,the only part of the installation that may give you a lil trouble is removeing the 4 bowl screws on the bottom of the carb,,but there are several options of how to complete it...............and if you still need advise or help, you can call or email me anytime while you are in the process,,,,again,,its easier than you think installing the new jets,,,,,,,,,,i realize that when it comes to the old sayin 'if it aint broke,,dont fix it'  ,,that does not apply here,,,,,,,,,,do the re-jet,,it is worth the effort,,,,,,,you can do it in as little as 20 minutes for the experienced or about 45min to an hour for the unexperienced,,,,,,,,,,,and really,,you cant screw anything up doing so.

Anyhow,,if you decide on a re-jet,,email me,,,  jekle2000(AT)yahoo.com  be sure to include yer home addy so i can send out a set,,payment can wait till they arrive to ya,,im in no hurry, and check, cash or money order works ok for me,,,$15 shipped with instructions...................again,,i should have some in by next friday for sure.

thanks>>>>>drjekle

Andrew,

I can confirm that I ordered part # 23F-24500-11 from Yamaha and it fit my Sherpa perfectly.

There is a difference in the length of the pickup tube from the Sherpa petcock as discussed.

I've already decided it's a do-it. The new addition (Sherpa) won't be home until September, so sounds like timing is good. I'll drop a check off to you in August so I'll have it all when the bike comes.

The Sherpa Stork's GPS was upside down and it dropped off the new baby in Pennsylvania instead of Texas, so it's being delivered in September. And I hate this waiting...........
