Jumped on the KLR this morning to ride to work. Noticed that my tach was reading low. Won't go above 4300 rpm and is slow to get to that point too. Also, when turning on the turn signals, the tach bounces in time with the turnsignal. Could a completely dead battery be causing this? My headlight does not come on at all unless the engine is running. Any ideas of where or what to start looking for? Anybody else experience this?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yes, yes and yes. Had the same issue with my '98 KLR 250. I put a new battery in it and everything was back to normal.

I knew my battery was on it's way out anyway so I'll stick with that!! It's 5 years old now anyway.

Another question then. The YB4L-A or CB4L-A that is specified is not real common. Any reason I can't use the YTX4L-A? I can find these everywhere.

I'll have to let someone else answer that one as I do not know.

I ended up putting in a YTX4L-A from Wallyworld (Walmart). $32 and it seems to be doing fine now. Thanks for the help.

hey i have the same problem, first i put a new battery in but that didnt help so then i started looking at all of the connectors, i found that the one near the battery heading towards the front of the bike was dodgey so i put a new plug on and it worked perfectly! I think that the problem is a dodgey Earth.
