Title: Another Liter of Water
Post by: ajeli on February 06, 2015, 05:12:37 PM
Well I've decided to restart my continuing RR thread "One liter of Water".
If you remember, cool. If not, it was just small reports and pictures from local spots around my home.
I don't think it'll be a weekly thing this time but often enough I guess. I hope you enjoy.

Vasquez Rocks!

(http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa336/ajeli/20150206_103810.jpg) (http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/ajeli/media/20150206_103810.jpg.html)

Roughly 15 miles from my home you'll find a very famous rock formation.
I borrowed this from the website:
"Vasquez Rocks, located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs, features 932 acres of spectacular rock formations, Tataviam Indian sites, and a seasonal stream. The rocks’ history began in prehistoric times when the sandstone rocks were uplifted at a picturesque angle, showing their jagged red features. In 1874 Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California’s most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature. The park is a popular hiking, picnicking, and equestrian area and has been used in many hit movies, television shows and commercials"

It's a half mile dirt road into the park. Free by the way!

The short walk to the top.

what trialsguy said... +1 ..food for the soul

In the last picture can you ride that terrain or would it be too rough?
Title: Re: Another Liter of Water
Post by: ajeli on February 07, 2015, 10:22:33 PM
Unfortunately what you see in that picture is hiking and horse only.
The park is surrounded on 3 sides by a uppity neighborhood full of dual-sport/dirt-bike haters.
I was just reading an article that the Sherriff's department is increasing their desert patrol in the area and dishing out a ton of tickets.
Not everyone is of the "tread lightly" state of mind and they are RUINING it for the rest of us!  :soap:
That's a whole other heated subject out here right now though.

There is a place I go about 10 miles from there  that has similar terrain and is really fun.
I'll do that place next. Gotta charge up the gopro for that one.  :naughty:

Glad you guys are enjoying it.

Alan

Well I think I'll do some kind of writing today.
I didn't go riding last week but we did take the young'ns to the Grand Canyon.

Really I was blown away. I think people overuse the word "awesome" I've only used it to describe northern Ak and the tundra.
But the Grand Canyon is awesome. I had never been there before and was excited to take the kids.
We all had a good time and talked about it for quite a while on the way home.
It's about 7 hours from my house.

Thanks!  It's great to hear of other members' doings, even if you didn't get there on a KLR.  Community.  Yup, the GC is awesome, and in the real sense of the word.

Figuring talking about such things is ok..... my second time at the GC was on a road trip on a 125 Honda, got there in the middle of the night, saw it by the moon.... incredible, maybe even more so because I saw just the bare bones of it, no details.

First time (and I know this must sound like BS) I was on a Forest Circus fire crew getting flown from Idaho to AZ, my first fire ever.  Left Couer d'Alene in the middle of the night, come daybreak I woke up (window seat, I'm a flying freak and fought for it) on the east side of the plane.... and there was the Grand Canyon. So beautiful, incredible, and cosmic.  Smacked me upside the head.

Those are good stories Trialsguy. Moonlight would be amazing I think.
I forgot to mention that it was free for President's Weekend

So here is another update.
I didn't go anywhere but I hit 50,000 miles on the KLR today!
I made a video to commemorate the occasion. I didn't work very hard on it.
I have a ridiculous amount of pictures and video of my bike.
Enjoy.

Good stuff Alan! Yes, awesome is over used...then, when you do see something that rates an awesome its kinda lost it's punch! So.....who remembers the episode of Bonanza where Little Joe climbs the incline at Vasquez Rocks then tumbles to the bottom? He and his hat depart company about halfway down but when he stands up. Yep....hat is back on! One of my favorites! Now....back to Alan's awesome adventure!!

Not to thread jack... but.. Spanky there was a show that used to run here called the trailer park boys in which one guy {Jillian}was in all scenes with a glass of rum and coke. In one episode they flip over an old 70 vintage ford meteor .. Jillian gets out of the vehicle with drink still in tact to survey the situation .

lol same odds as that cowboy hat..  :11doh:

That show is on Netflix. Funny stuff.

Ok, here's the plan:
Rebuild the carb on the dust collecting DRZ next Thursday morning and make sure it runs okay.
Fill my backpack with food, water and tools.
Scout a new (for me) OHV area on Friday ( Got a free OHV map today! )
Get you guys the sneak-peak Friday night or Saturday.
Get a buddy or two to agree to follow me out to the middle of nowhere for a possible overnight dual-sport trip in a couple weeks.
I don't know how technical the area is, so I don't know how long it will take. Could only be a days worth of riding.
(I have a bad reputation for leading people into over their (our) head situations that require more work than necessary,  :muhaha: )
Have a good time and report back here.

Any takers?  :deal:

Well...
No DRZ for at least another week. The parts I got from Suzuki were for a flat-slide Mikuni, I have a CV, so it's just sitting there, not running still.
I opened up the carb and cleaned it out. It needs a new accelerator pump diaphragm.

(http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa336/ajeli/20150312_130851.jpg) (http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/ajeli/media/20150312_130851.jpg.html)

After I did an oil change on the KLR, did some chores, wasted more time at Suzuki I met a friend for lunch.
Andrew is new to the dual-sport world and has a sweet DR650. Last time I saw this bike it was bone stock.
He went a little ape with his favorite new website procycle.com

(http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa336/ajeli/20150313_111709.jpg) (http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/ajeli/media/20150313_111709.jpg.html)

Having not seen each other for a while we sat at a diner for way too long.
After lunch we rode maybe 20 miles and didn't take any pictures. It was nice to get some dirt on my tires though.

Sorry for the false build-up guys. I'll try again next weekend.

Alan

Well...
There's only one word to describe today.
And that word is not allowed on this family friendly forum.

Let's just say that the DRZ is still under the knife.

And let's let this video explain how the KLR is feeling today.

Can I try and cheer things up?  There IS good mocus in the motorcycle world, now and then.

I got some time and *finally* got my SRX 600 single running.  Had set, got the carb gummed up, I tore it apart ( :Aarrg:), didn't work, sat 9 more  months, tried it again, ( :Aarrg:),  found a .0000000001" hole plugged up (I think)  :think2: but anyway, it runs and I got the idle screw adjusted way out of specs, but it runs well.  I think.

This may be one of those mechanical problems where you don't definitively find the problem, but simply put in the required amount of time/work/suffering that the cosmos wants.... :deal:

Surprised the hell outa me.  Haven't ridden it many miles yet, we'll see....

Good luck!

That is good news.

I'll have them running soon enough.
Just have to wait for parts now. I've had enough of these children that work at the parts counter now.
The parts got ordered on line this time. I shouldn't have to teach a parts guy his job.

Well... I got the radiator all patched up and re-installed.
I had to take the tank off because the fan connector couldn't be reached.
And while pulling the gas line from the tank,
I pulled too hard and broke the inlet elbow off the carb.  :splat:
And of course nobody in town has one in stock.

On the plus side my wife has been kind enough to let me borrow her Bonneville this week.
That bike is fun to ride but needs a windshield.
It has given me ample opportunity to try out my new Alpinestars "Drystar Apex" gloves.
They have armor and leather and Velcro and straps and magic dust that keep your hands dry and warm.
So far the coldest it's been while wearing them was around 50F. They do a good job keeping the cold out.
I've put about 500 miles on them in the last couple weeks and they are comfy.
Why did I spend $95 on gloves you ask? Because my last A-stars lasted 4 years and 50K miles.
I would still use them if the thumb didn't have a big hole in it. And they aren't really waterproof anymore.

(http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa336/ajeli/Apex.png) (http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/ajeli/media/Apex.png.html)

Also I've been drooling at the Kawi shop. They have a black 2015 Versys 1000.  :drooler: :drooler: :drooler: :drooler:
I want one so bad. Sitting on it doesn't help.
Am I gonna buy one? Probably. When you ask?...  :think2: ASAP and I stress the "P"  :Hap1:

HmmKay
The KLR is up and running after what seems like years.
I installed new coolant lines I found on the innerwebs.
I DON'T recommend doing this farkle unless you have to. But my coolant hoses were crumbling as I took them off.
It's not fun and your not getting the lines off or on without lube and some new swear words.
(http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa336/ajeli/20150411_134843.jpg) (http://s1192.photobucket.com/user/ajeli/media/20150411_134843.jpg.html)
It looks nice I guess. I hope they don't turn pink though. Also not all the clamps work on the new lines since they have a bigger O.D.

If you run out of cuss words, you can use this website.  http://foulomatic.hnldesign.nl/

And here's a snake I saw today. A big fatty close to five feet. And heavy to. No time for adventuring though.

Short version is that after being down with an ear infection, dental work, broke bikes and too much stuff to do...
I dropped everything today and went for a ride in the local hills. About 50 mile round trip.

This trail was (as they say in Massachusetts) a wicked pissah!

All in all had a fun morning. I'll edit up the rest of the video later.

No riding this week except for commuting
But I did do a 3.2 mile hike with a fishing stop in the middle.
Silverwood Lake is about an hour from my house. Expensive to camp but free fishing if you hike it in.

Didn't catch anything Mac. Weather was pretty nasty last few days and that water is COLD right now.
They're down deep right now I think. I'll try again in a couple weeks. You can pull out some whopper sized bass out of there.
We have a camping trip planned next month at a lake I've never been to. Word on the street is it has good fishin.

Never fails Dave. Get all set, go out for a ride, break something.  :11doh:

Yowieee..step away from the laptop for a break and this news flash pops up !!! Parting with an old friend like the KLR is like sending your oldest son off to college in a distant city .... uhhh ...no, the son in the distant city at college was costing me $$$ and selling my KLR made the $$$ flow back...as did selling the Honda and the 25ft RV...

Well congratulations are in order Amigo... whats on for a replacement ?? Which way is Vito heading  ??

It wasn't the easiest decision I've ever made.

I had been in contact with Vito for a few weeks.
He has a two year Visa. He's heading up the coast on his way up to Prince George BC.
He has a job waiting for him. After a couple months he'll go over to Alaska for a bit.
I'll see him again in about 6 months before he has to go home for Visa reasons, and then come back for more riding around the US.

I picked him up Friday morning and took him to his first American diner where I had to explain grits, biscuits, gravy and links.
Got the bike signed over, insured and some last minute supplies.
Showed him how to do an oil change and what daily maintenance she needs on a long trip and sent him on his way.

As far as replacing it. I don't know yet.
I've been looking a Craigslist but haven't seen anything good yet. Some neat bikes though.
Luckily my Wife is letting me borrow her Bonneville to get back and forth to work.
And i'm waiting for a the new tail light for the DRZ.

Ok, nobody throw anything at your computer now.
I've gone to the dark side guys.
As you can see, my son likes it.
It's an 07 wee, with less than 11,000 on the odometer. Lot's of extras. And it was cheap!

Hope you enjoy the new ride! Looks nice and comfy.

But can I make an early prediction??

...you'll be back on a KLR at some point.

Heh, You're probably right Oldstove.

So far I can't say that either is better. They are very different bikes.
One drawback is I can't make the strom wheelie as easy as the KLR.
I'll figure it out.

Honestly. I'm not diggin the wee.
I've put about 1500 miles on it and have made up my mind to sell it.
I'll sort this out so i can get back to having fun and start doing some good posts.
And yes I'll probably get another klr. Live and learn

Several years ago while I had my 01 KLR, I bought a Wee. It was smooth and had more power and was great to ride. I had it a few years but no matter how I tried, no matter what parts I changed to get it right, it never "fit" me. It was a great, trouble free bike, just not for me. I bought my 09 KLR to try out the Gen 2 and resell, but after a few rides I realized that the KLR does fit me.

Nothing wrong with scratching that itch and trying something else, it lets you realize what does work for you.   :ricky:

Aye, it's no doubt the Wee is a great bike, but maybe doesn't suit.  I got crazy and got a Concours when I wanted a cool sport-tourer.  That was my mid-life crisis, I think.  Age 60, so I'm good to go to 120.

Anyway, I wanted a DS, got the KLR, and now the Connie(s) (there are 2) aren't used and need to go.  Great bikes, they just don't suit me now.

Well regardless of what you end up with, know that it's a great pleasure trying out the various options. With any luck you'll end up  with a sweet KLR.

Good luck in your search. Looking forward to seeing what you decide on.

Hey Alan...

That right bike combo  will land when you least expect it. I travel solo the most...  born out of  riding mucho on weekdays. I was by- passing some interesting rock shelf/garden type trails on the KLR and realized those areas were off limits coupled with the margin of safety needed to just "get home " on a big bike. It boiled down to the KLR being the big picture bike... and a WR250R being the zoom up close unit. ..i couldn't be happier.

I'd like to add that maybe a couple of weeks ago I was following up on a trail system called the Old Debert road in Nova Scotia...that  i spied  earlier  on the KLR .. being a stubborn old goat I buckled in and aborted a 40 km trail at about 20km mark while on the WR ..it looked like this pretty much non stop...

I plan on returning to finish the route but new to me is the plan to post up another rider invite on the local DS site... Many would say thats just common sense..."But" i hadn't hit the plateau were my need to roam conflicted with being too far off the beaten path or something that even resembled a road.

Best of luck ... the best part is your youth.... and a beautiful family at your side while all this unfolds...

Bill

Interesting discussion on the wee/KLR decision. My KLR has been down for an extended time for maintenance (nothing big wrong, I'm just slow), and I've been riding the Vstrom.

I really like it, but today when I finally got the KLR buttoned up and took it for a test ride, I found myself thinking "Yeah, I'm back where I belong". Kind of took me by surprise, as I say I like the Vstrom a lot. But it ain't a KLR. There just seems to be something about these things, once they get into the blood, it's like malaria... once you have it, you always have it.

OKAY, so I don't actually have her back. I'm more like baby sitting her until March.
But the guy who bought it was kind enough to add me to his insurance so I could ride it.
Vito, (the guy who bought this bike from me) had to go home to Tasmania for visa reasons.
He went on an adventure that makes my old 9,000 miles in 26 days look like a ride to the store.  :poke:
Any who, it needs some work and I don't like how it runs right now.
So far I put a new back tire on it and am waiting for a couple parts.
Unfortunately Vito isn't overly mechanically inclined. Very nice guy though.
Stuff I need to address:
New front tire
exhaust leak
intake leak
fan doesn't come on
brake fluid
oil/filter change
cracked fairing
remanufacture the highway pegs I built
reshape one pannier
bend a pannier bracket into square
fix the passenger pegs (flopping around
broken mirror
bent lever
clutch adjustment
check the valves
strip it down and check the frame welds
find the oil leak
grease the speedo drive
coolant
fork oil
 klrt3
He's paying for any parts and labor.
Don't tell him, but I would have done it for free. Shhhhh

Hi Alan..  consider doing a water pump seal install thread in the engine section? Was great to have similar reference material as confidence builders for newbies in the old forum.
I'm thinking that when i check my valve clearance this winter i could do a write up for that. :think2:
Title: Re: Another Liter of Water
Post by: ajeli on December 17, 2015, 08:33:29 PM
Actually I WAS thinking about it. I remember using a really good write up someone did when I did the Doohickey years ago.
You should do a valve check write up so we can start building the library up again.

Just waiting on some parts to show up.  humph1
Hoping they get here tomorrow so I get it done.
Alan

will do in the new year..especially since the "weatherrrr" has pretty much closed in here... got spoiled last year with the riding till end of Dec.
I remember seeing things like the wobble socket to take the valve cover off and the hemostat tweezers to pull out the shims with.
