Here's an article about a quite attractive young lady that was out riding on the back of a bike without full gear on.  There wasn't a crash, she got knocked off by the wind from the speed they were riding.

Hate to sound like a safety freak, but road rash is painful!  Unfortunately I learned about it without having to pay the full price.

A friend of mine slid down the road in a pair of jeans.  The sadistic nurse at the ER had a ball scrubbing him down with antiseptic cleanser and a scrub brush.  Later she kind of seemed enjoying pulling the bits of asphalt from his skin!

I'm a fan of ATGATT.  I've been down a couple of times on my KLR at relatively low speeds.  The first time it happened so slowly that I had all the time in the world to comprehend what was happening.  Despite my best efforts I couldn't keep my head (helmeted) from smacking the ground hard enough to see stars.  Imagine if I had no helmet????  My riding pants don't have hip pads.  My next set will.  I live in DFW which gets pretty hot in the summer, so I wear a mesh jacket.  ATGATT.  -Stephen

That girl is tough, Man that hurt's to look @ the road rash, My step-daughter want's a crotch rocket& I'lll have her read this story. You should always dress 4 the wreck not the ride, I live in Texas 1 day @ the store a guy said hey ur a lil overdressed it was a 102 outside. I said it's easier to sweat then get skin graft's , he just looked dumbfounded...Duhhh...Ride On ...

Great article, you have to feel sorry for her.

I have forwarded this to my road buddies. They wear no protective gear other then boots and helmet. Jackets are for cold weather only.

We do live in PHX and it is not uncommon to ride in 115+ plus, but I always wear my jacket. As long you keep moving you are OK.

After 3 decades the differences in skin color and texture are barely noticeable on my back and butt. The result of sliding around a corner on my butt, shoulder, and helmet. Grinding the helmet into the pavement is what stopped me because the T-shirt and gym shorts lasted about 1/4" of the smear at 11:00 at night.... The stupidest thing was limping home and having my mom find me wrapped in bloody sheets that were stuck to me the next morning (young & dumb). My wife realizes I'm not that speed freak and just let me put a deposit on a '03, part of the negotiations included what I would wear while on the bike...I'm still pretty dumb, but wise enough to learn from not thinking; besides past a certain age it is the proper thing to do (cover as much of the old body from the view of those with weak stomachs).
My 2 cents: postpone a farkle item for the bike and get the body armor. Any inputs as to good gear shops in the Denver area (before I pay the final installment on the bike)?

Marty that one sure hit the spot for me. That is one couragious girl, I tell ya. I could feel her pain as she told her story and shared the pics. The guy she was riding with, well, I hope he learned a lesson too. I know I did.
