Was that video, "The Way of the Desert Sled" posted on here? Well, even if it was it's worth watching again:

I sure hope you get more use out of it than the PO did. Blue is the color I would have to have if I ever had one of these.

I messed around with my KLX today. I read a guy's tuning setup on ADV and thought I might try it. He has a 351 kit, as do I, and rides somewhat the same area I do. He dropped his main jet down to a 120, replaced the needle holder with one from a KLX300 (has an extra hole in it) and is using the stock air snorkel. Now this is interesting because most people try to go to the bigger snorkel (from the KDX200) and a bigger jet. His reasoning was that the smaller snorkel gave you increased air velocity which, when combined with the better jet holder, gives a better burning gas/air mixture. Or something like that. I had a 122 jet so I put that in, installed the KLX300 holder that I bought, put the stock snorkel back in, and I put my more aggressive (and louder) exhaust back on.

With a leaner jetting and smaller air intake the thing ran great! I came up a 6% grade on the interstate at 70mph (optimistically indicated). Not shabby. I bet it improves my mileage too.

As I recall you have been for some time. It's amazing how much restraint we can exercise when it comes to not buying new motorcycles.

Edit: And I mean no disrespect of course, just an acknowledgment of the way things are. I go onto the local online want adds weekly and see something I'd love to have. Last year it was a 2010 Husaberg 390. almost new for a good price. Now I have the itch for a Honda CRF250X. And I wouldn't mind a older KLR to mess with. And Triumph Scrambler. I barely have room for two bikes let alone stable. And then there's that pesky budget constraint.

I've decided that I'll be selling my BMW R1150RT & KLR650 and replacing them with a 990 Adventure and a KLX 400.

Just need to do it....

And now, for something completely different:

Some of my garage art.  '73 FLH with a 93" S&S motor.  Pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum from a KLR, ain't it?

Saw a Honda NX 650 today when I was at the mall. Never saw one before. Looks a lot like the KLR to me, with a lot less of the plastics. Anyone ever try one??

Guido,

Your KLR and its stable mate the FLH have a lot more in common than most people think. They are both carboraited, the battery is in the same location, both are basic easy to work on motorcycles, they both have there flaws yet people love them. In there day the FLH's were used like a KLR. Highway, hill climb, off road.

I wish it were my KLR's stable mate, though I don't know where I'd put it. That FLH belongs to road_thing. Still, I see your point.
