What a PITA!  Gone are the nice easy to get to KLR fliter cleanings.  I had to pull the tank and most of the plastic just to get to the thing.  It's a weirdo filter too.  Thin foam with hair on one side (I swear!).  Clean it with B12 and reoil with SAE 30 to the hair (blonde hair too...must be a Sweede scalp or something as I've never seen a naturally blonde Japanese person).  The bike does run much better now.  Breathing a bit better I suppose.  I'll probablly clean it a little more often.  I went by the book at 7500 miles and it was pretty dirty.  South Carolina seem to be more dusty than where I was in Tennessee.  It's all the sand and red clay I suppose.

Just cracked my bike open and saw the filter.  It is a strange thing.  Here are a couple pics.

Is there an aftermarket air filter for the Versys? How often is the air cleaner supposed to be changed when it is ridden mainly on the street?

Manual says every 7500 but I think I'll cut mine down to around 6000 or so.  Dusty around these parts.  I have seen aftermarket filters on eBay.  Same as the 650 Ninja.

Yes, the filter pictured above is from my 08 versys.  I replaced it with a DNA air filter (looks like a k&n).  I've also seen BMC's filter.

No, I don't think that K&N has a filter available.  At least it isn't on their site.

I'll try to post a pic of the DNA filter later.
