My 2001 KLR was getting a little noisy so I decided to do the Doo. Ordered Doo kit from Eagle Mikes. My brother also has a 2001 KLR. So we had a Doo party. My bike first 19000 miles 6000 put on by me. Brother bike has 21000 miles 700 put on by him. Pull my bike apart found broken spring the doo was not broken. felt pretty lucky. Install new doo and torsion spring all is good and quiet. Next brothers bike. No spring at all, where did that go? but wait his doo was broken with parts missing. Nothing tightening his balancer chain....... we just did a 300 mile ride with last part freeway riding (payson to Phoenix). Where we lucky or what. Install his doo and torsion spring. All is good.If you have not done the Doo I recommend that you do it or have it done. The guy at he kawi dealer still says he has never heard of a problem with the Doo. Two bikes two bad Doo's.

I found almost exactly the same thing that your brother did on my 2001 with 14,000 miles on it this last weekend. Broken doo, missing spring. I found one end of the spring in tact against the oil screen, a few pieces of chewed up metal in there, and what I THINK was the rest of the doo.

Unfortunately, I did the oil screen first, and threw what I thought was some rubber chunks (I recall reading that part of the balancer has a few rubber pieces in it) out before I realized that the doo was broken or that the spring was missing. Fortunately, the bike runs fine now, and with my magnetic drain plug I hope to catch the rest, if any, of the remaining pieces.

When I did my doo the spring was m.i.a never did find it.  Kawi dealer claims there is no such problem. Then again the same dumbasses thought the petcock on my xj650 was broken because after it sat for a week it had to be primed to start.

I did mine at 13,500 and spring was weak but top half of doo was missing as in your pic. I tore the water pump side down and did not find piece. At 17,500 my new spring broke and trashed the top end of my motor, on the subsequent tear down I put a magnet down by the crank on a whim and low and behold out comes the half of my doo. Who knows why it did not get up into crank but it stayed in the oil apparently.
