Just got a KLR, all faded Aztec red at 12,000 miles and ready for some travel farkles.
So what are the cheap ways to mount soft bags for a Trans America Trail (TAT) ride late June ?

This looks cheap and easy but I have not tired it.

I bought these about two years ago and have been very happy with them. At $85 they are about $15 cheaper than I paid for them. I like them because they give me something to fasten bags to, they keep bags off the muffler and they are very good handles for picking the bike back up after it takes a nap. Congrats on the KLR. I am still in love with mine.

That for the eBay idea. What soft bags are you using and how do they deal with the rear turn signals with those racks ?

I've used the Ebay racks with cortech bags for the last 3 years. No problems with blinker blockage or muffler meltdowns.  Ride on! Cheers!

I got wolfman bags on mine. they are great. waterproof and variable size. I can run quick errands with them, or pack a week of camping into them.

The racks are pretty sweet, but they cost a bit.

Ebay is the KLRista's friend. Great source for used parts to fix everything you break.  I use a set of saddlebags I bought off ebay several years ago called Moto Pak.  I got a good deal on them and am very happy with them but I can no longer find them on ebay.

Edit: I found a link to the bag I have. http://motopakluggage.com/gts90.html  I paid about $65 shipped back when they would sell one bag a week on ebay. I think they are a fairly new company and were selling them cheap just to get their product out there. They must have stopped selling on ebay but you can get them through some retailers.

So how do you like the motopak bags?  Do they strap down firmly so they aren't flying around while riding offroad?  I'm shopping for new bags but they have to be able to take some offroad abuse.

The MOTO PAK is a fine bag. They come with built in rain covers and have plenty of expansion room. The tie down system took a little work to  understand and use them with the ebay side racks. I've honestly only ridden twice with them on the bike and that was on the road. They were plenty secure as the wind was concerned. I suspect they would be fine for off road too. The danger is overstuffing them and carrying too much weight.
