Rear fender mod?
«

Hi folks
My apologies, I know I saw it in the forums somewhere but can't seem to find it now. I'm looking for info on the rear fender mod. Is it just a matter of cutting the fender or is it better to remove it completely? Thanks

Are you talking about the inner fender that the license plate mounts to?

I used a dremel tool and cut off the lower part of the fender so it looks like this.

I did a quick and dirty (cheap) mod without regard to amp draw. I removed the license plate and holder and installed them to the bump on the fender (lower than slo). I went to Advanced Auto and bought a $5 license plate lite (chrome) and made a backing plate for the lite out of a piece of black plastic I had lying around. The lite had 2 screw holes, so I cut the black plastic piece to match the shape of the lite and screwed the lite to the plastic bracket. I drilled 2 holes in the plastic to match the license bracket and mounted the bracket, with lite attached, and license plate bracket to the fender bump. I removed the old license plate lite and just plugged my new lite wires into the banana plugs. I then used a wood trim saw to cut off the lower portion of the inner fender below the reflectors. The trim saw made a very clean cut so I did not remove the inner fender to do any of the work. Cost = $5

It is a KXF fender. Fairly simple mod. Remove the stock outer fender, cut the inner fender back, leaving the mount holes and clips intact, plus a few inches. The KXF fender is much larger and has to be cut, heated and molded a bit to fit inside the inner fender. When it is formed well, clamp it in place and drill the holes corresponding with the mount holes in the inner fender. I cut the mounting tabs in half and placed one on top and the threaded side underneath, just like the original, drilled and tapped the subframe crossmember to accept another mounting screw and, viola! Many different tail/brake options, I went with the smallest I could find that had the most LEDs in it. It is very bright (much brighter than stock) and used led mounting bolts for the plate light.. It worked great! Anyone know how to get E alerts to your posts?

If you have pics of all this is would be great. To get an E alert, you will see on the top right of the thread a notify tab.

OK guys. Here are the pics I have. They are not a step by step procedure but it gives you some insight on the work done. If you are really gonna do it I can give better instructions through E mail or phone.

Here's what I did:
It is the MX style rear fender for a KDX200/220 from Maier plastics (not my preference, but it was free) and then I took the sub-fender from a Yamaha R6 to mount a LED tail/brake light. It was easy to cut the fender down, and yes, I'm change colors of the bike. I did not cut the original sub-fender, I just added a new outer fender. BTW, I weighed the original assembly and it weighed about 4 lbs on my digital postal scale. The new one weighs less than a pound.

I'm about to do this exact mod. I have the new KX fender and new tail light. The tail section is all apart. I need to change the rear shock spring, front sprocket, and chain first. This is going to be a fun project this weekend!
I can't just leave it alone and ride it, right. I just have to tinker with it. I think that's half the fun.

I'm glad you guys like this mod but I just don't get it.
It looks better? Well um...maybe, but who cares? You can't see your arse when you're ridin' down the trail.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Do you comb your hair? Why? You can't see yourself walking down the road or sitting at your desk. What if you had a big tear in the ass of your pants?

I got back to this project at long last. I got the fender mounted. My friend put the same little LED tail light on his CRF and the running light is very visible but the brake light is barely noticeable. So I spent another $20 at Dennis Kirk and got a 1 and 1/4" diameter red LED light that I'll wire to the brake light and hang off the back of the rack. We had a dual-sport pile-up 2 years ago because the brake light on my friend's Baja kit on his Katoom wasn't bright enough to see at all and he decided to stop and turn suddenly while we were all on a city street with off-road knobbies. I went wide and stayed up. I almost ran my friend over, who wasn't so lucky. He just got bruised up pretty good but he was ok. My friend in the lead with the s---ty tail light was named Mudd for a while. I'll post a pic when the light gets here and I mount it.

I like the single screw from underneath! I used wire ties. I should have done what you did.
