I mainly commute on my '03. Went to a 15/42 combo a couple years ago. It's OK, but I'm going back to stock next time.

I normally run a 16/43 for commuting and light offroad riding, moderate trails I'll switch to a 15/43 all with the stock chain. 
When I go billy-goating, I put on the 14/49 (with a larger chain) and go tree climbing.
