Greetings all
Newbie here with my first post.
A friend of mine bought a 2003 Super Sherpa for $1,600 from a dealer who took it in on trade. Newer tires, carb. work ,new battery, 16k miles, taxes and registration included. Seemed like a good deal. He is very happy
This has me also interested in getting one of these bikes for my wife.
I made an offer on a somewhat local 2003 with super low miles (under 1000) of $1800 but the owner refused (asking price is $2400). The bike is in very nice condition but it obviously has been sitting around a lot.
Was my offer reasonable or should I expect to pay more for this bike in this condition with low miles.?

I have no idea what the used market holds for this model. I think new in 2009 it could have been had for under $4K

Can someone chime in with some advice.

Well, kbb shows suggested retail value in excellent shape for said 2003 Super Sherpa at $2190. I wouldn't go any higher than that unless you're completely in love with it or it has some accessories which would up the value. You may want to do a little more looking before jumping on that one.

The seller didn't counter offer so I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.
With a bike that age with so few miles its likely going to need some attention. I figured original tires and battery were probably in need of replacement and possible fuel system work may be required. ??

Thanks for the reply.

Don't get me wrong...if you have the opportunity to test ride it and its all good, then the kbb price isn't too far off. $2000 or even $2100 for an excellent shape 2003 with those miles isn't necessarily out of the question.

I know I'm a bit deliquent on this thread but you should jump on the $1600. That's a good price if the bike is in any rideable condition.

again, sorry I'm such a slacker.  Greenie

The $ 1,600 bike did sell......the one in question is the $ 2,400 one.

I bought a 2009 with only 41 miles on it last fall for $ 3,000.....and thought it was a great buy.  I did have to drive a 18 hour round trip to retrieve it

These are rare bikes, and I love the one I have, but I do not think they are worth $2400 in this economy.  I bought mine for $1500 with 5400 miles and it came with a complete parts bike that had a title.  Just my $.02.

Indeed a fabulous bike. If one of mine ever has to go it will be the KLR, NOT the Sherpa.

Sherpa's tend to hold their value quite well.

I bought my '02 model back in '06 for about 2300.00. It was in great shape with low miles. That was after searching for several months for one. Had to travel several hours to TN to get it.

I would go check out the bike and see how it runs. If it has been sitting for a while and the owner didn't take any precautions on storing it, it will probably have a gunked up carb. If it looks good and runs good, I'd make him another offer.

With those low miles, that bike is probably worth at least 2200-2300.00 bucks. Just my opinion.

Here is a recent listing on my local Craigslist:

Garage-kept 2000 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa. Only 5,800 miles, ridden mostly pavement and only a few gravel roads. New tires, luggage rack, Dr. Jekyl jet kit installed (#130 main jet/#20 pilot jet). 12V socket installed for GPS or cell phone charging. Excellent shape. 80 mpg, paint looks new. $2500 or best offer. Need to sell to pay taxes! Phone calls only to 388-1465 area code 828.

I've been looking around a bit for Sherpa's for a buddy of mine at work. They are far and few between. The one Mel mentions is just what you're looking for. And in the right hands, they'll run circles around your average KLR. I know...I spent quite a bit of time playing catch up to Mel(and others) out in Moab a few years back. Awesome

It took me a year to find mine.  When I see another one, I am going to buy it.  That one in Hendersville is perfect.

Unfortunately, that one sold a week or so ago. It was my brother-in-law's. As far as I'm familiar with its history, it belonged to Asheville Thumper's wife, who sold it to a co-worker of my brother's ( I was a go-between on that deal), who then sold it to my brother, who THEN sold it to my BIL. Over that period, it may have traveled more miles on a hitch-hauler to Hillsborough and then back again than it did under its own power I'm cruizin'.
