Re>Doohicky, Isn't it just a case of putting a shorter spring in there so it actually pulls on that lever when the bolt is loosened? Or is that an over simplification of the problem.

As a side note, I hope this is nor off topic, the exhaust on my 2012 rattled loose after only 400 miles, started leaking at the clamp. 
The header pipe ridgid bkt right in front of the clamp was completely loose, and the canister muffler mount bolts were starting to loosen.
I removed the canister, carefully pulled out the graphite/wire mesh packing, cleaned etc.  I reassembled using Permatex Ultra Copper sealant on all surfaces around the packing, and blue and red loctite on mounting hardware.  Should be good now as
I have been using the Ultra Copper high temp on exhausts for years and it works really good for problematic joints and flanges, doesn't burn up.   
If your new bike is spluttering on the decels, which is what mine was doing (and getting worse over the last hundred miles), check for a leak at the coupling clamp.
