Whenever I have to start my bike on choke I occasionally get a clunking noise that sounds like it's kicking back at me.  It will fire up every time, but on occasions it will make this god awfull noise.  It's an 08 with just shy of 10k miles on it.  I have not had any modifications done to it yet nor has the valves been adjusted as of this point.  The PO told me that he heard this was a problem and supposedly the cam has to be ground a little to solve it.  I personally believe that he was either blowing smoke up my butt or just has no idea what he was talking about.  Could it just be my valves needing an adjustment?  It has been doing this for a while, I am just too lazy to ask until now.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds like your KACR (automatic compression release) is hanging up. It was a known problem on some 08'sfish back when new. They were needing to be reground. Do a search in the upper right and you should find some info.

It is mounted on the end of the exhaust cam and you have to remove that cam when doing a valve adjustment

The grind modification on the KACR was to cure a cold start issue because it  would open the valve too much. Nothing to do with making noises.  Does this happen only when the choke is on? or does it happen other times?  It sounds like you are do for a valve check regardless, so I would start there and see if that cures the issue.

It only happens when the choke is on.  I also noticed that even today when it was nice and warm out I had to choke it to start it.  I will check into the other threads.  Thanks on the insight.

Research 'deep-hole' problem.  Starter idler gear hole in left side case is drilled too deep on some '08's causing bad noise and bad wear on starter gears.  Easy fix after taking the left side cover off, might need a left side cover gasket might not.  Same outside cover you take off when doing the doohicky.

I guess that is the next thing I need to consider doing anyways.  I work on cars and big trucks all day and yet I never want to work on my own stuff.  Such is life.
