Yes, it happened again…saturday nite - 7th March
Tring, tring, “hey Thump you wunna go for a ride tomorrow?”
“No not really, I would like to but I’ve been out every weekend since…can’t remember…Have stacks to do around the house. Where are you going?”“Don’t know yet, just want a long ride but must be back by 2pm”
“Sounds like a good Idea.. Email me when you have a route”“Okay, You sure you can’t make it?”
“I’m sure, what time you leaving?”“Don’t know yet, but early, I must be back by 2pm”
“hmmm…..okay, send me the route when you have it”“ok”
“I only got ±4hrs sleep last night so I’ll phone you when I get up”“OK”
I go to the PC and just wildly plot 3 potential routes and send them to Bakkie saying:
“Three choices from me. You can add whatever choices you want. I'm too easy to be disappointed. Just send your final route you decide on so I can load on my GPS.”
He chose option 3.
Phone him at 6am, “I’m Up lets go”.
We meet at Colchester to fill up and head towards Kinkelbos.
I’ve never done Kinklebos, had heard it’s very sandy and okes with more experience than me with much more expensive bikes have battled so I was apprehensive. (One of my bigger words, learnt it after getting the KLR)
I must have got the roads confused there were very few patches of sand and they weren’t very deep. Even Bakkie never had a problem. :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer:
The red was the planned route, the yellow the one we did as we ran out of time.
There was a slight mist at the start.
Here travelling through Kinklebos stretch. Most photos taken while riding, we didn’t feel like stopping.
Beautiful, grass was green and air was clear and KLR is awesome.(Ok, ok the KTM wasn't bad either)
Stop at Alexandria for cool drink and Snacks
Then onto Woody cape through Cannon Rocks to Bushmans river.
Here the mist got very thick making visibility very poor.
I had to ride faster to get the water to run off the visor.
I tried to get a pic of Gorillas in the mist,
..but by the time Bakkie caught up the mist had cleared.
We went through Kenton and then on to GHT through southwell.
Gravel highway with Pot holes. Gave a bit of oil. (KLR + high speed = Oil consumed)
I missed the GPS signal to turn off and ended up going past some WD kennels.
If you have to ride tar it should be like this road.
We then followed the R67 as we (Well Bakkie) were worried about time.
Turned of onto the road to kwandwe game farm.
Heading along this rocky road I'm trailing behind Bakkie's Dust when I suddenly see Bakkie stopped at the side of the road.
He had just made his tyres Tubeless that week. Front gave out and nearly made Him Boobless.
Amazing that he kept the bike up while skidding to a stop just before and slightly into the bend.
I take back all the things I said about his riding in the past. (Ok well not all, but some)
He is definitely a natural.
Check the skids. front and back wheel making their marks.
Bakkie does have a heart... I heard it pounding.
(Unless that was his stomach trying to reverse... But I never heard the Beep, Beep, Beep noise)
So Bakkie starts the repairs.
I won't tell you Bakkie's official home language...
But check his pillion.
Luckily he had a tube as the rim was a bit bashed up.
Bakkie is no mean wheel changer.
I go to get my compressor for him.
(Typical helpful KLR rider).
And find this.
My tyre weld can had worn against the top box bracket and burst inside the bag. what a mess.
Well Bakkie gets finished and I'm off, get to the gate of the Game farm and wait... and wait.
Eventually he rocks up.
As he was about to leave he got attacked by the environmental police helicopter.
Apparently it was upset about the smell he made when he K@ked himself.
Luckily due to abilities picked up during his miss spent youth, Bakkie won.

Always nervous when the signs say beware: Lions, Elephants, Rhinos and Wildebeest.
Never saw the lions, elephant or Rhino this time.
Unfortunately by this stage we where officially out of time and Bakkie had to head home. (His wife was working at 2 and he had to get back to look after the kids.
Knowing how unreliable a KTM is I rode back with him, doing the last 30km to Colchester on reserve before filling up and going home.
I love the nuvi500. get home, take off bike and wash under tap. GPS clean again.
